Grassroots Plan to Grow Local Quizzing
The
Bible Quiz ministry is growing and through it God is changing
more and more young lives. Many churches are seeking to begin
a team and searching for local support, competition and fellowship.
Many more are not even aware that Bible Quizzing ex-ists,
even though the church down the street may be fully involved.
For these reasons, a "grassroots" model in needed
to make this ministry even more effective and pervasive.
The
WBQA "grassroots" plan is to find a large number
of local contact people who want to help promote God's word
to the young people in their area. The goal is not to bring
WBQA style to local teams, but rather that they may contact
each other on a local level and use the quiz style and questions
that will work best for their constituents. Hence, a local
event may be planned between denominational teams and independent
or new churches. The result will be to both strengthen the
denominational teams as well as the "independent"
teams and start many new teams along the way.
Premises
1.
Make interdenominational quizzing more available on a local
level.
2. Strengthen our web of contacts so that local involvement
will be more accessible.
3. Increase opportunities for training and promotion of Bible
Quizzing.
4. Promote a grassroots model of growth.
Implementation
Local
Contact People
Local Contacts work to support teams in or near their hometown.
The job description is simply to serve as contact to promote
inter-denominational quizzing in the local area. Local areas
will be assigned as contacts are available, and these local
areas may overlap. Local contact people need only be willing
to answer inquiries about quizzing.
Local
Quiz Leagues
WBQA will support interdenominational Quiz Leagues by publicizing
the League Name, local contact person, quiz style and eligi-bility
requirements. Local Leagues may provide news items to WBQA
but need not "report" to headquarters. Local league
events are not an official function of WBQA and need not use
WBQA rules.
Interdenominational
Quiz Meets and Tournaments
A Quiz Meet will consist of approximately 3 preliminary quizzes
per team plus a championship quiz. A Quiz Tournament will
con-sist of approximately 6 preliminaries per team plus playoffs
and finals. Either WBQA rules or another style may be used.
WBQA can support Quiz Meets / Tournaments in any of the following
ways:
1) Publication of dates, material and results in the newsletter
and / or web site.
2) Questions from quiz generator and Brackets provided if
requested.

A Tribute to Bernice
On
the evening of August 9, Bernice Larimore passed away. Bernice
and her husband Bert contributed greatly to the growth and
influence of the Bible Quizzing ministry. By traveling cross-country
with their famous quiz seats and score-board, the pair brought
an extra level of import and excitement to quiz events. The
Bible Quiz component of Bernice's ministry lasted for over
35 years. Bert and Bernice appeared at a different tournament
nearly every weekend during this timespan, earning the love
and respect of countless teens in Bible Quizzing. After her
husband's death, Bernice carried on the ministry for several
more years.
The Larimores visited nearly every summer WBQA Championship
through the '70's '80's and '90's. In recognition of their
ministry, the WBQA Finals Quizmaster's Choice award was renamed
the Larimore Award in 1984. This award is for the quizzer
who most demonstrates Christ's love through excellence in
quizzing, leadership and testimony. Bert and Ber-nice were
a wonderful example of this testimony and Christ's love. Bernice
will be sorely missed, but we rejoice in her life of ministry
and that she is now with her Lord.
NYI
(Nazarene Youth International) has partnered with the Larimore
Family to set up a memorial fund that will send quiz equipment
around the world in memory of Bernice. If you would like to
help, please contact NYI at 816-333-7000 ext 2484. By John

08-01-01 "Quizzes
Like a Girl" wins WBQA Finals
This
year's World Bible Quiz Association Finals was a great success.
There were a total of 23 teams in three divi-sions. The quizzing
was intense and there were really no teams that "pulled
ahead" of the rest of the pack. I would like to personally
congratulate every team at the tournament for how well they
did. A special congratulation goes to the top 3 teams of each
division. In the Varsity division the top three teams were:
1st Quizzes Like A Girl, 2nd Berrien and 3rd De-troit 2. In
the Junior Varsity Division the top three teams were: 1st
Pittsburgh Bible Quizzing 3, 2nd Pittsburgh Bible Quiz-zing
2, and 3rd Kentucky Nazarene. In the King James Division the
top three teams were: 1st Covenant Life, 2nd Youth-quake Salt,
and 3rd Youthquake Light. This year's Larimore Award went
to Julie Hodsdon from Quizzes Like A Girl. This was Julie's
senior and final year in quizzing. Congratulations Julie!
Our speaker this year was Tom Houston, director of Shenango
Valley Bible Quizzing. The music was done by Joel Kamper from
Teen Bible Challenge and Andy Dalrymple from Canton. And who
can forget Madison Greene-thanks for the great concert! I
would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the
tournament. I want to thank all of the quizmasters, scorekeepers,
material judges, the rate people, Tom Houston for his excellent
messages, and Joel and Andy for their music. I hope to see
you all next year. God Bless.

Bernie Elliot to speak at 2002 Finals
We
are pleased to announce that Pastor Bernie Elliot will be
our devotional speaker for this year's WBQA finals. The tournament
is June 26 through 30. The varsity quiz material is 1 and
2 Corinthians.
The
JV division was successful for the second consecutive year,
and we will run this division again. Many of these quizzers
will be moving to varsity for this year's finals. We have
had great JV participation at Regionals and Chicago, and this
is a wonderful opportunity for these teams to wrap up their
seasons with a big event. This division is available to any-body
up through and including grade 9.
WBQA
will again offer a 50% discount to all "new" teams.
A "new" team is one from a program that has not
sent a team to the tournament in the past 4 years and that
consists only of quizzers attending for their first time.
This discount is quite significant because it applies to the
team fee and the individual fee to cover room and board.
KJV Quiz Material
This
year's KJV material is Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians and
Colossians. If you have any questions, please contact Sal
Varsalone at 330-493-0749 or Mel White at 309-582-3171. If
you need quiz materials for King James quizzing, call Nada
Rogers at 716-889-1466.

From The Archives
This
newsletter we well take a trip back to 1981. Finals that year
were held at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. The
dates were July 23-26 and the material was 1 and 2 Corinthians.
Twenty-three teams took part with Pilgrim Chapel BiC finishing
third. Finishing second was Olivet Nazarene and the champions
were Nappanee Missionary. The top scorer was Kay Heinrichs
from Detroit YFC with an average of 55.4 followed by Dan Miller
from Nappanee Missionary with a 54.0 average and third was
Carlos Ramos from Huron Valley YFC #1 with an average of 48.3.
I'm still looking for information on the earlier years, 1974-1978
and 1982. Also on Chicago pre-1986. If you have any of that
information, contact Chris at 610-589-2573 or by email at
Cfrey57@aol.com.

Denominational Profile
This newsletter let's take a look at Christian Missionary
Alliance (CMA) quizzing. CMA quizzers must be 13 or in 7th
grade and may compete through age 19. CMA quizzing for the
most part follows the WBQA cycle. Teams consist of five quizzers-four
starting quizzers and one substitute. Quizzes consist of three
teams over twenty questions using a style similar to WBQA.
Question types are basically the same as WBQA with the addition
of multiple-answer questions. Scoring is similar to WBQA with
the addition of a twenty-point bonus for each team with five
members present at the scheduled starting time of the quiz.
There is also a bonus given in the first fifteen questions
to the remaining team after two consecu-tive errors. For more
information on CMA quizzing you can contact either Juanita
Douglas at rrdouglas@pathway.net or Jon Caskey at cask@bright.net.
